I Can Do It! (Affirmations, Mantras, and Positivity, OH MY)

I wish I knew this tree's mantra!
Over the years, I’ve dabbled in affirmations.  I’ve read about them.  I’ve written them down.  I believe in them.  I’ve learned to pay attention to what I’m thinking and then change it to something more positive.  I’ve even spent days trying to immerse myself in a positive thought – repeating it over and over like a mantra.  And all of that was helpful and got me further along on the path.

But something’s missing.  For some reason or another, I always stop practicing them, or I lose interest, or I feel I’m not picking the right one, or I over-think it – (no, not me!).  So now I want to create a system that works for me – something that sticks and rings true, something that I want to do.

My brain can be as undisciplined as they come.  I used to believe that my brain was just the way it was, like it was designed to do what it does, and think the way it thought and I didn’t have any control over it.  Imagine my delight when I began to learn that I could change my thinking, my patterns; my very brain waves.  I am still intrigued and excited by that, it’s a big reason I do what I do.

But have you ever tried to change something about yourself?  It may be simple, but it’s anything but easy.  Knowing that you can, is a far cry from actually making the effort to do it.  But there’s something inside me that won’t let me rest until I address what I “want” to do and find something that works for me.

I know myself; and I know that if I’m going to do something and have long-term success, it has to be simple, simple, simple, it has to ring true, be something I’m excited about, and something I do consistently.  So let’s break that down.

1.  Simple, simple, simple – I’m pretty sure one of the reasons affirmations haven’t worked for me is because I was trying to pick the “right” one, or do it “right”, but all I really want is it to be right for ME.  So I asked myself what I want to feel and believe right now and the first thing that popped in my head was, "I can do it”.  That’s it!  I want my entire being to believe that I can do whatever I want to do.  YES!!  I want to fight my doubt and believe in myself!  I found my first affirmation.  You can choose one or immerse yourself in many, whatever works for you.

So ask yourself what you want right now and see what comes up.  Maybe you want love, happiness, success, prosperity.  See what YOUR heart desires and make it a positive statement.  “I am happy” or “God loves me”.  Just make sure it’s what YOU want and keep it simple sister!

2.  Ring True – If your affirmation doesn’t feel good when you say it or it’s not what you really want or it’s not in your own words, then you probably won’t use it.  Remember your mantra is for you, no one else.  It’s what we want to believe about ourselves but have told ourselves over and over is not true.  So make it yours.  Make it what you want.  Just ask yourself or God and wait for the answer.  You’ll know.  When you practice your mantra, say it out loud or to yourself and say it with feeling.  When we put our emotions behind what we are saying, then it packs a much bigger punch….so, “I CAN DO IT!!!”…and so can you.

3.    Consistent
a.  We have to make it a part of our normal routine, like brushing our teeth.  Think of your affirmation the first thing in the morning and start saying it as many times in your head or out loud as you can stand.  If you don’t remember first thing, then let something trigger your mantra, like your morning coffee or driving to work; let that be the “string around your finger”.
b.  Write it down – if you’re like me, it has a much higher likelihood of getting done if it’s written down.  I write my affirmation in my daily notebook, everyday; see my blog “The Pursuit of Happiness”.  You can even set some affirmation goals, i.e. “say personal affirmation 50 times today”.  Write it on Post-it Notes or Index cards and put them where you’ll see them.  Just do it!  Hey, isn’t that an affirmation?

One last thing, if you fall off the wagon, at any time, just start over.  The worst thing we can do is give up, or think that it’s too late, or not bother because it won’t to do any good anyway.  Those are the thoughts and feelings we must fight, and affirmations are another tool in our toolbox to help us do that.

So go forth and don’t lose heart.  I say these words as much for myself as I do for you.  Remember, it’s just life, so enjoy the JOYney!
